History and things to know

According to the shrine's tradition, its forerunner was a storehouse-style shrine to Shōin's spirit built by members of the Sugi family, the family he was born into, when the Shōka Sonjuku was repaired in Meiji 23 (1890). In Meiji 40, upon a petition by Itō Hirobumi and others, its founding as a prefectural shrine was permitted, and in Shōwa 30 (1955) the kami was moved to the present main shrine.
