History and things to know
According to temple tradition, the principal image, Koyasu Jizō Bosatsu, is said to have been made by the Cloistered Emperor Go-Shirakawa. At its founding in Engen 4 (1339), Ashikaga Takauji is said to have planted the "Chikai no Matsu" (Pine of the Vow) at the temple entrance and installed the Jizō. After the war an ancient burial mound (kofun) was found in the grounds, and the 聰明閣, where temple treasures are displayed, and the Monju Hall were built.
