History and things to know

According to the shrine's tradition, in Taihō 1 (701), when the kami of the three Kumano shrines of Kishū were moved to Tōtōmi at the wish of Emperor Monmu, this place was chosen as the site corresponding to Shingū. Mikumano Jinja is said to correspond to Hongū and Ogasa Jinja to Nachi, and there is also a legend that Minamoto no Yoritomo prayed here during his exile in Izu.
