History and things to know

According to temple tradition, it is said that in Karyaku 1 (1326) Daikaku Daisōjō Myōjitsu Shōnin, second patriarch of Myōken-ji in Kyoto, built it in the castle town of Takatō, and that in Enbun 5 (1360) it welcomed Nichidai Shōnin, fifth abbot of Minobusan, as its founder, moved to Kitahara in Takatō, and for a time was called Chōon-ji. In the Edo period it received the devotion of Oshizu no Kata, birth mother of Hoshina Masayuki, and in Kyōhō 11 (1726) a tahōtō pagoda containing relics of Nichiren Shōnin's bones was installed.
