History and things to know

According to the official guide, because many of its buildings and documents were lost in war in the Eiroku era, the origin and date of its founding are not clear. On the other hand, its annual festival from September 10 to 13 is said to have a history of at least 1,200 years, and in the hamaori (going down to the shore) rite "Kazusa Jūnisha Matsuri", said to have begun in Daidō 2 (807), the enshrined kami Tamayorihime no Mikoto and the kami of her family are said to meet again once a year at Tsurigasaki Beach.
