History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, on the day 西郷稠頼 built a castle on this site, a dragon kami appeared at the keep and was enshrined as the guardian of the castle. Ieyasu was born in this castle in Tenbun 11, and after his death a Tōshōgū was enshrined within the castle in honor of his achievements. Honda Tadakatsu was later enshrined together with him; it became a prefectural shrine in Taishō 3, and the rebuilding of the shrine buildings was carried forward in Shōwa 37.
