History and things to know
According to the temple's tradition, it was opened in Kenji 1 (1275) as a Shingon sect 会下寺, and although it received the devotion of the Hōjō, the regents in Kamakura, it lost its halls and other buildings in Eitoku 3 (1383) and declined. In Meiō 5 (1496) 楞山周厳 Oshō, second abbot of Sōken-in, revived it and converted it to the Sōtō sect, and in Tenpō 5 (1834) it moved to its present hill and rebuilt its halls.
