History and things to know
According to the official history of the shrine, the hall that enshrined Kenshin's remains was moved into Yonezawa Castle; in the Meiji period it was converted to Shinto form, Yōzan was enshrined together with him, and it was named Uesugi Jinja. It lost its buildings in the great Yonezawa fire of Taishō 8, and in Taishō 12 the present buildings, designed by Dr. Itō Chūta, were completed.
