History and things to know

According to temple tradition, it was founded in Kan'ei 1 (1624) by 本光院日授 Shōnin and has handed down the Dharma as a direct subsidiary temple of Honmyō-ji. The temple grounds are the site of the castle of 山鹿重安, who perished in Tenshō 15 (1587) resisting Sassa Narimasa, and memorial tablets (ihai) and stone stupas (itabi) for his clan remain. The main hall burned down in Tenpō 6 (1835), and the main hall rebuilt in Kaei 2 (1849) has a ceiling painting of a dragon by 狩野洞容寿信.
