History and things to know

According to the official history, the Shoku Nihongi records under the ninth month of Keiun 2 (705) that a Yatagarasu shrine was worshipped in Uda District of Yamato Province, and this is regarded as the record of its founding. The shrine explains that it later came to be called by the name of Taketsunumi no Mikoto, whom the Kamo clan of Yamashiro revere as their ancestral kami.
