History and things to know
According to the shrine's tradition, it was founded by imperial command in the 2nd year of Emperor Yūryaku (458) and at first enshrined Ame no Tajikarao no Mikoto. In Shōhei 10 (1355) Sugawara no Michizane was enshrined with him, and in Bunmei 10 (1478) Ōta Dōkan is said to have rebuilt it. The present shrine building, made entirely of hinoki cypress, was completed in Heisei 7.
