History and things to know

According to the official guide, Yamaoka Tesshū built the temple in Meiji 16 to mourn those who lost their lives for the country from the end of the Edo period through the Meiji Restoration. The temple name comes from a framed inscription by Rankei Dōryū that Tesshū treasured, and the site is said to be where Dōryū once had a hermitage. In the grounds is the grave of San'yūtei Enchō.
