Shōgun Jizō and the Atago faith

A description by the City of Kyoto introduces the faith surrounding Shōgun Jizō, who was the principal image of Mount Atago, and the tengu Tarōbō. The rites of today's Atago Jinja, after the Meiji separation of kami and buddhas, differ from the historical faith in Atago Daigongen. The history of Mount Atago brings together mountain practice, Buddhism, and the prayers of everyday life for care with fire.
