Taishang Ganying Pian 12: Not making envy or difference a weapon
English rendering of the Japanese reader’s section 12. The 24 divisions are this site’s editorial divisions, not original chapters.
English rendering
Seeing others prosper in high office and wishing exile or demotion upon them. Seeing wealth and wishing it lost; seeing beauty and secretly wanting possession of it. Owing someone money or property while wishing them dead. Cursing when a request is not granted. Speaking of another’s faults when they are in difficulty. Laughing at someone’s bodily impairment and suppressing another’s admirable ability.
Reading note from this site
The original condemns ridicule of bodily difference. Differences in bodies and ability are not reasons to deny dignity.
Chinese source passage
見他榮貴,願他流貶;見他富有,願他破散;見他色美,起心私之;負他貨財,願他身死;干求不遂,便生咒恨;見他失便,便說他過;見他體相不具而笑之,見他才能可稱而抑之。
