The Five Great Myōō, who guide people in stern forms
The Five Great Myōō are a group with Fudō at the center, together with Gōzanze, Gundari, Daiitoku, and Kongō Yasha. Tōji explains them as the working in which Dainichi Nyorai's compassion takes on a wrathful form to save people.

The membership differs by school
Shōhōin notes that in the Tendai tradition, Ususama Myōō is sometimes placed instead of Kongō Yasha. The Five Great Myōō and the Godairiki Bosatsu (Five Great Power Bodhisattvas), which derive from a different sutra, each have their own origins, although they became linked in later times.
