Jōgyō and Muhengyō

上行無辺行じょうぎょうむへんぎょう

Jōgyō and Muhengyō are not one long name for a single figure, but the names of two separate bodhisattvas. The four figures Jōgyō (上行), Muhengyō, Jōgyō (浄行), and Anryūgyō are counted as the Four Leaders who guide the bodhisattvas who emerge from the earth (jiyu no bosatsu) in the Lotus Sutra.

This introduction is based on materials from Shōhōin (Tobi Fudō). It is summarized within the scope of the beliefs and traditions those materials convey, and does not present explanations or customs common to all schools, shrines, and temples.
