History and things to know
According to the temple's tradition, its forerunner was the Tendai temple Shōgaku-ji. When its buildings burned in the warfare of the Nanboku-chō period, monks are said to have protected the principal image of Amida Nyorai by burying it in the ground. Later it was moved to the present site, and in Tenshō 2 (1574) it was revived as a Shingon temple. The principal image also escaped harm in two later fires.
