History and things to know

According to the temple's tradition, it is said to have been built by Gyōki in the Tenpyō era, or alternatively founded in the Tenchō era, but its certain history is regarded as beginning in the Kamakura period, when Shōkoku Isen, who had returned from Song China, became its resident priest. After prospering under the patronage of the Shioda Hōjō clan, it declined, and around Tenshō 8 (1580) 高山順京 revived it as a Sōtō temple.
