History and things to know
According to the official guide, it began in Kyōhō 7 (1722) when the fourth lord, Makino 忠壽, built a shrine in the main enclosure (honmaru) of Nagaoka Castle. The ninth lord, Tadakiyo, built new shrine buildings on Yūkyūzan, completed in Tenmei 1 (1781). The shrine buildings survived both the Boshin War and the Nagaoka air raid without burning, and in Heisei 18 they became Registered Tangible Cultural Properties of Japan.
