History and things to know
According to temple tradition, it began in Daiei 1 when 堪誉直道 built a hermitage here, owing to a connection with the old Sakurai-ji. Matsudaira Nobusada, lord of Sakurai Castle, made it the temple for memorial services for his family's ancestors, put the main hall and other buildings in order from Kyōroku 2, and received as its principal image an Amida Nyorai said to be the work of the Buddhist sculptor Kasuga. Within its grounds are the graves of successive generations of the Sakurai Matsudaira family.
