History and things to know
According to the temple's tradition, it began with a hermitage that Shinran Shōnin built in Yamashina in 1212 after returning from Echigo to Kyoto, and later the priest Ryōgen moved the temple to Higashiyama. It is said to have been granted the name “Amida Bukkō-ji” by Emperor Go-Daigo, and in 1586 it moved to its present site at the request of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The present Amida Hall was rebuilt in the Meiji period.
