History and things to know
According to temple tradition, it began in Kōnin 1 (810) when Kōbō Daishi built a hermitage in present-day Futaba-chō and installed a Yakushi Nyorai he carved himself. It later became a large temple with seven sub-temples, but lost its halls and pagoda in a fire in Meiji 22 (1889), and in Meiji 44, with help from Takaosan Yakuō-in and others, it moved to the present site and was rebuilt.
