History and things to know

According to the temple's tradition, it began in Keiun 1 (704), when Gyōki Bosatsu, at the age of 37, made his own family home into a temple, and in Tenpyō 2 (730) its buildings are said to have been put in order by order of Emperor Shōmu. In the Kamakura period Eison Shōnin revived it, establishing an ordination platform and a goma hall, and in Heisei 1 (1989) the three-story pagoda was rebuilt.

Before you visit

Because map apps may guide you to the back gate if you set the temple name as your destination, the official guide recommends that those coming by car set “家原寺 南大門(仁王門)” (the Nandaimon, or Niō Gate, of Ebara-ji) as the destination.
