History and things to know

According to the temple's tradition, it was founded by Gyōki in Tenpyō Shōhō 5 (753) and was once called Amida-ji. The temple burned down amid the warfare of Tengyō 3 (940), but it is said that later 抜山優婆塞, said to be a son of Taira no Masakado, found the principal image, a statue of Amida Buddha giving off light from inside the earth, and revived the temple.
