History and things to know
According to the official guide, it was formerly called Enoshima Myōjin and, through Shinto–Buddhist syncretism, became associated with Benzaiten and was revered as Enoshima Benzaiten. The Happi (eight-armed) Benzaiten and the Myōon Benzaiten are enshrined in the Hōanden of the Hetsunomiya, and it is said that in the Edo period the shrine was crowded with worshippers on Enoshima pilgrimages.
