History and things to know
According to the temple's tradition, it is said to have been founded in Tenchō 5 (828) by Jikaku Daishi Ennin, head (zasu) of the Tendai school. The official guide states that it was rebuilt each time its buildings were lost to fire; after the fire of Meiji 31 the Yakushi Hall, which had been moved, served as a temporary main hall, and the main hall was rebuilt in Shōwa 43.
