Principal object of worship: Amida Nyorai

History and things to know

According to temple tradition, it began when Hōjō Tokimasa built it in Bunji 5 (1189) to pray for victory in Minamoto no Yoritomo's campaign against Ōshū, and its halls were developed over three generations of the Hōjō clan. Its buildings were lost in warfare at the end of the 15th century, but the five buddha images made by Unkei in Bunji 2 (1186) have come down to the present and became National Treasures in Heisei 25.

Introduced by this site, based on materials from the shrine or temple and public bodies.
