History and things to know
According to the temple's tradition, it began about 500 years ago with Jōju-an, a hermitage built by the monk 行永 beside the old Nakahara Kaidō. The Edo Meisho Zue records that it was established in Bunroku 1 with the priest 念譽 as founding priest, and in Kan'ei 11 it was granted its present site by the shogunate and took the name Hachimanzan Jōju-in Gyōkei-ji.
