History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, its founding is unknown, but Hachidai Tennō is said to have been invited here in Einin 2 (1294). In the early Meiji period the 藪里 Gozu Tennō Sha and the 舞楽寺 Hachidai Tennō Sha were enshrined together with it, and the present main sanctuary was built in Taishō 15. Miyamoto Musashi is said to have prayed here before his duel at Sagarimatsu in Ichijōji, and an old trunk of the Sagarimatsu pine is enshrined in the grounds.
