History and things to know

According to temple tradition, it is said to have been built in the Asuka period after a revelation from the Zenkō-ji Nyorai, and the story of its founding has been handed down through picture-telling (etoki) as the "Shirasuke Monogatari". It is the 18th temple of the Shinano Thirty-Three Kannon pilgrimage, and its present abbot is the 35th. At New Year and on the ennichi on the 18th of every month, prayers by the goma rite of Shingon esoteric Buddhism transmitted by Kōbō Daishi are performed before the principal image.
