History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, it began when Takenouchi no Sukune enshrined Ōshima no Ōkami, the guardian kami of the land, in the reign of Emperor Seimu, and it is said to have been named Himure no Yashiro Hachimangū (日群之社八幡宮) after an auspicious sign during Emperor Ōjin's visit to Ōmi. In Shōryaku 2 (991), by imperial request of Emperor Ichijō, the kami of Usa Hachimangū was ceremonially invited to Mount Hachiman, and with the building of Hachimanyama Castle in Tenshō 13 the shrine on the mountain was merged into the shrine at its foot. As the castle town developed, it came to be revered as the guardian kami of the Ōmi merchants.
