History and things to know
According to shrine tradition, it is said to have begun when Emperor Nintoku, concerned for the people suffering from a great earthquake, built the shrine during his reign. Its buildings were lost in warfare in the Sengoku period but were restored by Tokugawa Ieyasu; after they collapsed in the Great Kantō Earthquake, the present buildings were completed in Shōwa 3.
