History and things to know

According to the engi of Genbun 4, it began in Tenpyō 13 (741) when Gyōki Bosatsu, at the wish of Emperor Shōmu, built a Yakushi Hall to pray for the recovery of Empress Kōmyō from an eye disease. It is said that it later also received imperial wishes from Emperors Montoku and Seiwa, and it called itself “the temple of three imperial wishes”; in Kan'ei 19 (1642) it received a vermilion-seal grant of temple lands of 30 koku from the shogunate.
