History and things to know
According to temple tradition, in Kenji 3 (1277), with the help of the local lord Soya Kyōshin, a Jizō hall was moved and made into a Hokke hall, and the temple was opened after receiving from Nichiren the temple name "Chōkokusan Hondo-ji" together with sacred treasures, including a honzon written in his own hand. It was once called one of the "Sanchō Sanbon of the Rō lineage" (朗門の三長三本), together with Ikegami Honmon-ji and Hikigayatsu Myōhon-ji, but it declined through the persecution of the Fuju-fuse movement and the anti-Buddhist movement (haibutsu kishaku). The present main hall is recorded as having been built in Keian 4 (1651).

Before you visit
Because using the temple's address or phone number in a car navigation system leads you to a narrow back road, the official guide recommends searching with the address in front of the main gate (Hiraga 7, Matsudo).
