History and things to know

According to the temple's tradition, it was built as the Tendai temple Komuro-in in the Eishō era (1504–1520) and later fell into disuse; in the Eiroku era 学山存益, the second abbot of Yōju-in in Kawagoe, revived it as a Sōtō temple. It is said that the mountain name comes from an old story of admiring the moon reflected on the surface of a lake, and the temple name from the Buddhist name of Mizuno Morishige, the local steward (jitō) who helped its revival.
