History and things to know

According to the temple's tradition, it was founded within the precincts of Sennyū-ji in 1326, at the end of the Kamakura period, by 無人如導宗師. After burning in the Ōnin–Bunmei War, it was rebuilt in 1664–65 with the support of the shogunate and of Honda Masatsura and his wife, and the present main hall is said to be the 御須屋 granted at the time of the great funeral of Empress Dowager Eishō.
