History and things to know

According to the temple's guide, it began in Shōō 2 (1289), when a disciple of Taa Shinkyō Shōnin set up a practice hall here as a base for spreading the nenbutsu. It lost its halls in the great fire of Tenmei 5 and a fire in Bunka 4, and for about two hundred years had a temporary main hall, but in Heisei 7 a new main hall and priests' quarters of zelkova wood were built.
