History and things to know

According to the temple's guide, it began around the end of the Keichō era when Nagai Naokatsu, a fudai daimyō, built a temple on part of his secondary residence for retainers who had taken holy orders. Because nenbutsu services were held every thousand days after Naokatsu's death, it was called Sennichi-dera; the main hall was rebuilt in Shōwa 39 and Heisei 29.
