History and things to know

According to the temple's tradition, it was opened in Keichō 11 (1606) with Endō Yoshitaka, lord of Hachiman Castle, as founder, welcoming 半山紹碩, a leading disciple of Nanka Genkō of Myōshin-ji. In Genbun 3 (1738) it was granted the title “Gokoku” and an imperial plaque; after the hillside behind it collapsed in heavy rains in Meiji 26 and buried much of the temple complex, the main hall and the shoin (study hall) were rebuilt in Meiji 29.
