History and things to know
According to temple tradition, after the Battle of Dan-no-ura, Taira no Sadayoshi, a senior retainer of the Heike, hid in this place guarding a hanging scroll of Amida Nyorai and changed his name to Jōgi. After Sadayoshi's death, the Nyorai was enshrined above his grave in accordance with his will, and this is said to be the origin of the temple.
