History and things to know
According to the temple's tradition, it was founded in Meireki 1 (1655), and its founding priest was 晴誉順波 Oshō. Because many courtesans of Shin-Yoshiwara who died in the great earthquake of Ansei 2 (1855) were buried here, the popular name Nagekomi-dera arose, and the death registers recording the names of courtesans and their children still remain. The former main hall burned down in Shōwa 59, and the principal image was restored by a Buddhist sculptor in Kyoto.
