History and things to know

According to temple tradition, it was founded in Ōei 4 (1397) by 智正法師, a scholar-monk of Tendai teaching, and in the middle of the Muromachi period Rennyo Shōnin often stopped here and spread his teaching. At the time of the Ishiyama War, there is said to have been a fort here as one of the branch strongholds of Ishiyama Hongan-ji. The ginkgo tree in the grounds was planted when the main hall was rebuilt in Shōhō 1 (1644).
