History and things to know
According to temple tradition, in Tenpyō 11 (739) Gyōki built a hall and opened the temple with a Kannon statue he carved himself as the principal image. After it fell into ruin for a time in the Sengoku period, it was restored in the Tenshō era, and the present Kannon Hall was built in Manji 2 (1659) as the general main hall.
