History and things to know
According to shrine tradition, rites for the protection of the nation began on Mt. Kamadoyama (Mt. Hōmanzan), which lies in the kimon (unlucky northeast) direction from the Dazaifu government office, and it is said that in the 2nd year of Emperor Tenmu (673) the holy man Shinren received an oracle from the spirit of Tamayorihime, and the upper shrine was built by order of the court. It was ranked as a Myōjin Taisha in the Engishiki, and in Meiji 28 (1895) it became a Kanpei Shōsha.
