History and things to know

According to the shrine's tradition, it began with 霊椿山神社, the ancestral mausoleum of the Matsura family built by Matsura Takashi in Hōei 5 (1708). In the Meiji period the last domain lord, Matsura Akira, planned to move it, and together with Shichirō Jinja, Otomiya Jinja and Hachiman Jinja it was moved to the Ninomaru site; in Meiji 13 (1880) it was named Kameoka Jinja.
