History and things to know

According to temple tradition, it is said to have begun around Ten'ō 1 (781) when Fujiwara no Tsugutada, who was charged with the eastern campaign, built a temple here and installed the Jūichimen Kanzeon Daibosatsu he had carried with him. In Tenchō 2 (825) Jikaku Daishi Ennin revived it, and in the Edo period it drew the devotion of the people of Edo as the Niōson who wards off fire and theft.
