History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, it originated when Prince Naka no Ōe, while staying at the Nagatsu palace, enshrined Ame no Koyane no Mikoto here. In Jingo Keiun 2 (768), Fujiwara no Tamaro, the Dazai no Daini, welcomed Takemikazuchi no Mikoto and others from Kasuga Taisha in Nara and founded the shrine. After burning in the fighting of Tenshō 14 (1586), it was restored in Kan'ei 4 (1627) under Kuroda Kazushige.
