History and things to know

According to the temple's guide, in Jōan 5 (1175), when Hōnen Shōnin, having come down from Mount Hiei, recited the nenbutsu on a stone on this hill, purple clouds trailed and light shone all around, so he built a hermitage here. It is regarded as the first temple of the Jōdo-shū, and at the end of the Edo period the Aizu domain, as Kyoto Shugoshoku (Protector of Kyoto), set up its headquarters here.
