History and things to know
According to temple tradition, it began when Gonzō Daitoku, the master who shaved Kōbō Daishi's head, rejoiced at the Daishi's founding of Kōyasan and built a temple in Tenchō 1. After it burned down completely in the great Kōyasan fire of Meiji 21, it received the main sanctuary of the Tōshōgū from Kongōbu-ji and moved it here, and this is now its main hall.
