History and things to know

According to temple tradition, it is said to have begun in Tenshō 2 when Tokugawa Ieyasu built a temple in what is now Shizuoka City for the priest 了伝, to whom he owed a debt of gratitude. In Keichō 13 the second shogun, Hidetada, opened Matsudaira Saifuku-ji at Surugadai in Edo, and in Kan'ei 15 it moved to its present site. It lost its halls in the earthquake and the war, and a new main hall was built in Heisei 4.
